Welcome new and returning PRSSA members!

My name is Ashley Spruill and I want to welcome you to another year with Carolina PRSSA. As many of you are already aware, we kicked off the school year with our first interest meeting on September 3. There was a lot of information to take in – PRSSA offers its members a host of opportunities to grow and excel as pre-professionals.

PRSSA offers services to all undergraduate and graduate students at UNC, so the organization may seem overwhelming for those new to the PR field. I’m excited for Carolina PRSSA to be the first step students take to pursue the industry and discover their potential as a PR professional.

What exactly is PR?

PRSA (our parent organization) defines public relations as “a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” I share this definition with our new members at the beginning of the year for one reason – you will often be asked throughout your career what public relations is and what a public relations professional does. As budding professionals, it’s critical that we are able to relay not only what public relations is, but also why it’s an essential part of any business or organization.

It’s also important that those pursuing a career in public relations understand what it is that will be expected of them. I’ve spoken with professionals that talk of long hours, frustrating clients and a competitive job market, but they all say they wouldn’t change their career choice even if they could. That’s where Carolina PRSSA hopes to come in. We attempt to take what you learn in JOMC courses and combine that with real-world exposure to create an environment where students can continue learning and engaging with their peers in order to prepare them for what’s ahead.

How can I get involved?

I encourage you to do more than just pay dues and sit quietly in monthly meetings – actively participate. Dare to travel to a national conference. Get a group together to participate in a PRSSA-sponsored competition. Reach out to a professional using the PRSA member directory. There are endless resources and opportunities available to take you from being just a regular PR professional to being an exceptional one. Joining Carolina PRSSA is the first step to getting you connected, but I encourage you to really make your membership count.

Carolina PRSSA is here to get you prepared and connected. We’re always looking for ways to improve our member experience and make each year better than the last. So join us and become the PRofessional you’ve always wanted to be!
